Ricky Gervais joked about Scientologists at the Golden Globes last week but the actual Church of Scientology ran a huge ad during the event. It was such a general, aspirational ad that, at first, it seemed like it had to be for Cisco or IBM. If I remember correctly it was a version of this one:
Which reminded me that the Church of Scientology has a long history of TV advertising like this and this and prompted the question, why don’t other churches do the same? Maybe advertising just isn’t effective while product placement in the daily news is? Then I noticed another version of the same ad in tonight’s Jets/Steelers game. Something is going on.
